Steamroller Spotlight: Jeanine Coupe Ryding Exhibition
Of her work, Jeanine writes, "I have been making woodcut prints since 1967. They have been a constant companion to my ideas and my life, even when I have not had access to a print shop or press. I have made prints in the U.S., Germany, France, Canada, Italy and Belgium. I have printed work with over 60 people watching at print symposia and alone in my studio. I have printed my woodcuts on beautiful, old French Tool presses, brand new Tackach presses. I have also used a wooden salad spoon on my hands and knees on the living room floor. The expressive quality of the cut mark is an important part of the energy of each piece. I am often thinking of a three-dimensional shape and then describing it as I carve the block. The act of cutting an image into the wood offers possibilities and limitations in making marks that help me define the concepts in my work." Jeanine's prints and artist's books are in museum and private collections throughout the U.S., Europe and Japan.
She focuses primarily on woodcut prints, etchings, artist’s books, drawing and collage and has founded both Shadow Press and Press 928 in Evanston, Illinois, for fine art publishing. She received her BA from The University of Iowa and her MFA from Universitat der Kunste, Berlin, Germany. She has received various awards and residencies including Illinois Arts Council Award, Arts Midwest, Frans Masereel Center, Belgium and Anchor Graphics, Chicago, and had been teaching in the PrintMedia Department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago since 1991, and is now retired.
